Originally known as Zara Zote, Sarasota was first explored by the spanish in the early 16th century. In it’s early years Sarasota was a fishing and trading hub, and home to the Seminole tribe. In the 1840s European settlers began to arrive in large numbers. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries the Ringling Brothers chose Sarasota as the home base for their burgeoning circus empire. Women have been key to the development and growth of Sarasota. In the early 20th century Bertha Palmer developed many innovative practices that made the area one of the most productive cattle ranching regions in the country.
Market Watch magazine recently named Sarasota the Best City to retire to in the U.S.A. It’s easy to see why. Located in Southwest Florida Sarasota has great weather, it has warm winters and the sea-breeze from the ocean cools the summer heat. Then of course there are the beaches. Myakka River State Park was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1934 and features 39 miles of hiking trails, wetlands and prairies. And Sarasota is one the few places on earth where one can see Manatees in the wild.
